[#100] Doctor Who (Amy Pond)
39 Doctor Who (Amy Pond) for 20inspirations
+ 16 Textures
wonderland wonderland wonderland

First of all, wow, this is my 100th icon post here at gosh_darn_icons (which, considering how long ago I made this comm, is not actually very impressive? I've taken many extended breaks from iconning?). I feel like I should mark the occasion in some way, but haven't figured out yet how to do so. Keep your eyes peeled, I guess. But anyway, these icons are for Round 30 of 20inspirations where the theme was "Adventures in Wonderland", so the goal was to make weird/interesting/unusual/unexpected icons. I had a lot of fun with these, and I hope you guys like them! I've listed my inspirations below (plus some addition thoughts on each icon which are under cuts, so don't feel like you have to read any of them xD)

Inspirations

1. Graphic by loislanes[Thoughts]

Originally I was planning on making this a green icon like the graphic, but then I made a bunch of space textures for contextures and ended up using those instead. One thing I really liked about this challenge was that it pushed me to take popular caps (like this one) and go outside the box to give it a new look.

2. Texture by queen_bartonia + Word: inverted + Icon by library_of_sex[Thoughts]

I'm really happy with this one! It's one of the last few that I made; you'll see this icon in the alternates, it was my first attempt to make something with this texture. I do like the texture a lot and on one hand I wish I hadn't obscured so much of it because the lines and dots remind me of constellations and the circles remind me of Gallifreyan, but ultimately I wanted something a little bolder and more interesting and less reliant on the original texture. I really like this cap of Amy but the background was too busy so I painted over it, but tried to give it the look of the original background, if that makes sense. I didn't want it to look like a cutout, even though it was.

3. Graphic by calikalie[Thoughts]

Kalie's graphic is just stunning, I love it, and so I tried to be extra careful to not completely rip off the look of it xD Definitely inspired by the buildings in the background combined with the colourful elements, but I wanted to give it a different colour profile and a much more textured look. The original caps also have buildings in the background, but I used a different image for the silhouette. And yeah, it's a combo of two caps, for the poses. There are some simpler versions in the Alternates which I personally prefer, but I think this was better suited to the challenge.

4. Word: Obscure[Thoughts]

I don't think I've ever iconned this cap before, which is just ridiculous because it's such a lovely Eleven/Amy moment. The idea behind this one ended up being that Amy is really obscured and hard to see and blending in with the paint in the background, and it's like how Amy kind of washes over the Doctor's life like a sudden brush stroke on a canvas. I like the subtle muted colours here but I think I may try to recreate it with more vibrant colours some day in the future.

5. Icon by violateraindrop[Thoughts]

Just a clean simple icon like the one in the inspiration. Originally the plan was to do a side crop like violateraindrop's but I ended up likely how the pink colouring looked on her lips and wanted to keep that in. (I did mostly erase one of her eyes to make the crop work. That's kind of weird?). This is one of only 2 icons in the whole batch where I didn't cut anything out from the background! This one and #8. Everything else has a fake background or some kind of cutout going on, including the closeups in #7 and 20. Basically what I'm saying is this icon was a breath of fresh air xD

6. General Theme + Icon by tunaeverynight[Thoughts]

I saw the sunflowers in tunaeverynight's icon and OF COURSE I needed to make an Amy icon. You'll see in some of the Alternates, I used a pretty sunset background and then ultimately decided to keep the focus on Amy and the flowers.

7. General Theme + Graphic by jongritte[Thoughts]

I really like this one, even though it's not that different from things I've made before, I just have a lot of feelings about this episode and this moment and this character. I probably could have claimed just Amy in the Eleventh Hour and still made 20 icons no problem. There's a gap between 11 and Amy in the original cap so I blended them together. I like that the text is fairly unreadable but probably people could still figure it out based on the popularity of the quote? ("Then I grew up"/"Oh, you never want to do that"). And I think this moment really reminds me of Alice in Wonderland and the desire for childhood wonder.

8. Word: Inverted + Word: Sharp[Thoughts]

This was the first one I made I think, and I was going for a weird colouring. It's a really bright scene so I wanted to give it a really different look.

9. Word: Explosion[Thoughts]

I like this one! This and #18 have a similar vibe, but I wanted this one to look more painted, and I used a bunch of paint textures in the background. I love Amy's passion for art and I wanted to bring that in to the set in some way.

10. Texture by fuuurs[Thoughts]

Hmm, this one is kind of boring, idk, not sure what my thinking was here. Originally I was going to put sunflowers with this cap instead of #6 but it didn't end up working, so I just picked a different flower texture. I like how the purple looks with the red of Amy's hair but I'm pretty ambivalent on the rest tbh.

11. Icon by absolutelybatty + Texture by rebel[Thoughts]

Aw, another cap that I've wanted to icon for a while but never bothered to cut out before (#4 being the other). There are some Alternates of this cap which are prettier imo but I like the sort of weirdness of this. The orange/yellow/purple colour combo is one that I don't think I've used very much?

12. General Theme[Thoughts]

I made some notes when I was first trying to come up with idea for icons and one of them was "Amy with paint instead of hair", so this was kind of that. I really like the colours and that it gave a new look a scene that I've iconned many times before.

13. General Theme + Icon by misstress_tink [Thoughts]

Actually my initial inspiration for this sparked when I was looking through my post for 20inspirations Round 17, Down the Rabbit Hole, which was kind of a prequel round to this round a few years ago, and wanted to use some of the repetition and colours I used back them (this + this + this), and then added a whole bunch of textures. This is definitely one of the weirdest ones in the batch and I'm actually not sure how much I like it? I go back and forth on it.

14. General Theme[Thoughts]

I really really like this one. I saw this cap of Amy and it gave me Little Red Riding Hood vibes (actually, it reminded me of the Hard Candy movie poster but that poster has a Little Red Riding Hood thing going on too) Anyway. So I liked the idea of alluding to that, and originally I was going to put a wolf or something, but then I thought about the whole Rose/Bad Wolf thing and ended up using a cap from that. I made the background very monochromatic so that the shadow I put under Amy would show up, and to keep her the focus. The text was kind of purposeful, kind of because I don't think the allusion in the icon is actually that clear without it?

15. Word: Disguise[Thoughts]

Whattttt was I thinking with this icon. I know it doesn't look that weird but ugh. The whole point of it was that this cap does not lend itself to bright colours. IT DOES NOT. Even when you brighten it, it's still weirdly blue, and even when you try to remove the blue, the shadows are gross and green, and... Most icons and graphics I've seen from this scene end up embracing the blue, but not me. I'm a fighter. Most of the cap I ended up desaturating and then recolouring section by section with lots of Soft Light and Color layers and layer masks. And then the text was a whole other thing, idk, I love the look of mix-and-match retro fonts but I haven't had the confidence to try it before.

16. Graphic by renlybaratheon[Thoughts]

I did that thing that people do where they get rid of the face and replace it with something else! I planned on making her face just one big sunflower but it looked too creepy for my taste so this is a bit more subtle. I think my whole thing with this set was to make icons that are weird but still useable, you know?

17. Icon by oviedo[Thoughts]

I love the muted green colouring in oviedo's icon. I love this cap of Amy holding the apple, I love this episode, I love Amy, I will never stop being sad about the turn her storyline took in Series 6, etc, etc.

18. Word: explosion + Texture by blossombunny [Thoughts]

The original cap is fairly dark and dull so I couldn't resist making a really bright icon. I just wanted a ton of colour. The tiny text was a late addition but I think it really makes it, the yellow helps add some variety to the colours? I made Amy's hair really bright on purpose, that's the one thing I hesitate about because it does look less natural than I would normally colour it, but I think it works okay with the overall style of the icon? I've recoloured her hair many times and kept adjusting the contrast but eventually I just had to stop xD

19. General Theme + Texture by queen_bartonia[Thoughts]

Oh my god I love this one. I made it on a much bigger canvas so I don't know how much detail actually comes across but just conceptually it's the one that I'm happiest with. So "Through the looking glass, Amelia?" is a quote from a Series 7 episode, and that's a reference to Alice in Wonderland which of course is perfect for this challenge, and then what I wanted to do was have young Amelia looking into a mirror and seeing her older self on the other side, but I'm not sure how clear that is now that it's 100x100. Either way, I'm very happy with how it came together - I think I found the perfect cap to go inside the mirror and she was wearing red in both so that was nice. And all together it just reminds me of Amy's final monologue, "There's a little girl waiting in a garden. She's going to wait a long while, so she's going to need a lot of hope. Go to her. Tell her a story. Tell her that if she's patient, the days are coming that she'll never forget" because I just picture little Amelia waiting for so many years and how wonderful it would be if she could have seen her older self.

20. Word: Obscure[Thoughts]

I think this is actually the same cap as #7, but hopefully it looks different enough xD Yay, this makes three icons of the scene where Amy holds the apple! I love that scene! Anyway, so the point of this icon is to change up the focal point, because in the original cap Amy is in focus and the apple is blurry. This is actually a blend of two caps, I blurred Amy in this cap, and then cut out a shot where the apple was in focus.

I've also made some textures for contextures. Download zip, or see all individual textures here, mostly 200x200.

Comments would be really lovely if you like what you see! Also please do feel free to watch the comm for updates, I'm hoping my next post is a multifandom one because it's been a long time since I've iconned some of my fandoms! And finally, I believe I do still have the PSDs for all of these icons, so if you'd like to request a tutorial for any of them let me know! (I can't make any promises but I'll do my best! <3)

This is such a lovely entry! There are some icons here that really stray from your norm, but at the same time there's still that smooth, clean, contained kind of elegance that's present in all your icon posts. I also enjoyed reading about your opinions and process for each icon. It's always fun to get some insight into what each maker thinks of their own work.

The composition in 1 is truly phenomenal, and I love that constellation texture that really pops from the rest of the icon. I remember seeing 4 at anon_icon and loving it, and that hasn't changed one bit. It's got that textured vintage feel and I really like how Amy melts into that brush stroke. Wonderful brush work and negative space in 9. The composition and color contrast in 14 is so nice, and the text adds a nice touch as well. I can't believe how amazing the coloring of 15 looks after seeing the ultra blue original cap! You really kicked that cap's butt. I totally would've just given in to the blue, or made it another monochromatic color. I'm a big fan of the softness, composition and muted coloring in 17.

As for the alts, 34 has such a nice variety of colors, and I like how smooth all the lines look. There's just the right amount of contrast, but at the same time it looks barely touched, which is always a skill of yours that I've admired. 36 and 37 are both wonderful, and I actually saved both to my inspiration folder because I couldn't choose. Their figures pop so splendidly against the purple skyline in 36, but in 37 that extra burst of brush-y light makes the icon look so atmospheric.

Absolutely spectacular! I love everything! It is a really cohesive, beautifully done set, and it has reminded me of how much I loved Amy Pond.

The first icon is beyond stunning! I love the use of silhouette and duplication there to give that overused cap of Amy and the Doctor this whole new world as a background (so you definitely succeeded on that front). It is really interesting thematically, and it looks amazing visually as well. So I'd call it a supernova slam dunk (mixed metaphors for the win). I also adore the third one (and both of its alternates). The city backdrop is great, and I love the layered paint splatter as well; it gives it that extra pizazz. The tiny text is also fantastic, and the white splotch behind the Doctor and Amy really brings the attention to them in amongst that busy canvas. Really well done! The fifth icon is also spectacular. When you nail your light use, you really, REALLY nail your light use. I love the disappearing into light effect, and the rotation gives it that extra layer of unusual. I also love the color pink on her lips, really lovely!!

I adore the idea behind #6, and honestly, I'm not sure how you chose between the one that made the cut and the two alternates because they are all equally awesome. it was a great idea in terms of composition, and I think any of the three easily nail it. #9 and #10 are also gorgeous. The texture use in both is incredibly well done, and there's a delicate-ness about both that is really appealing (especially in #9 where the texture use is quite chaotic).

The whole next row is fabulous (the color contrast in the first one, the space hair in the second, and the blending in the fourth are particularly magnificent features), but the fifth icon has stolen my heart and run away with it! it is so cool to read about the coloring process of this icon. All that work definitely paid off though because the coloring is to die for, honestly. All the different poncho colors are beautiful, and I am especially in love with the skin tones considering what you had to do to get them to equalize. And the text is brilliantly done as well!

I also love flower face Amy! What a cool concept, and it is executed so perfectly as well. And then Little Amy seeing Adult Amy in the looking glass? PERFECTION. Another flawless concept executed just as flawlessly.

I am also in love with the first reject; great blending, and the muted coloring and lack of contrast are really cool! Great job overall! :D

first of all congratulations on your 100th icon post. that's awesomesauce *throws* confetti*

oh my i am in awe. first of all amy pond. when i read you are taking it for the challenge i was really excited. and seeing them now i am even more. perfect colors and crops. i totally agree with you about the popular crop thing, this challenge was made of win. i love what you did on #3, the color combinations are just perfect and loving the lights. #5 is one of my absoloute favorites. everything is perfect about this icon. i think #8 was the icon i looked at the most because it looks so different from the original but in a very good way, how you made it that dark and soft looking, it's just very lovely. #15 is just so damn cute. :') and #17, stunning. your style and awesomeness + amy pond icons = more please. :D

now excuse me, i have to save these. :p

I really love this set - it's so incredibly creative. Your texture use is absolutely gorgeous, especially in 2, 3 and 9. I really like how the textures were integrated into the image and overall icon and not just pasted above. The negative space and vintage look on 4 are great and I love the textures you've used. The coloring and light in 8 are fantastic - I love how the grey and deep, yet muted red of her lips work together. 13 is awesome - I love the duplication and all the colours in this one. The negative space in 14 is lovely, especially because of the text and the image which add a little special look to it. 17 and 20 are flawless. In 17 I absolutely love, love, love the muted coloring - it looks so neat. And 20 has this amazing sharpness/softness/blurriness going on. Also, from your alts I love 31 and 32 - they're really fantastic.

Oh, this set is so perfect! Your colorings are out of this world!!! And the compositions and texture use are so masterful in each one of them. Plus, AMY ♥

It's hard to even choose favorites cause everything here is so flawless but here are some things I particularly love about these - first of all the space textures are so perfect for 1, I love the vibe they give to the icon. 3 is absolutely amazing in every way, I love that it looks like a poster for a movie or something, and the colors are just spectacular, and so is the composition, texture use (really love what those painty bits add to it) and everything. 4 is one of my top favorites because the pale grunginess is so gorgeous, absolutely perfectly textured look and beautifully cohesive color scheme.
Wow, I love how much cutout work you did for this set, like 7, it's amazing how seamsless the blend is, I never would have known that the cap wasn't like this if you hadn't mentioned it in the comments! Love the text too. The vibrant painty textured looks in 9 and 18 are incredible and both icons are so eye-catching and I just love everything about them! I also adore 10, I can't imagine why you don't seem to appreciate this icon enough??? It's stunning! Love the dark purple negative space and the color combination of the flower texture and her hair and the whole blending with the darkness thing works so well in this.

12 is one of the most perfect things EVER. I already praised it a bit at the discussion comm but wow, I'm still not over how amazing it is with the painty hair and floating letters. The alts for it are wonderful as well. The composition and weird (in a good way) blends in 13 look so great, and I'm also a huge fan of the retro font combination in 15 and WOW what a fantastic job with the colors.
Also the entire last row is flawless, I really love the concepts in the last two especially, 19 is such an awesome take on the theme and the font is perfect and everything just works so well, and 20 is a really awesome execution of a very challenging and imaginative idea.

Thanks for sharing the textures, they look wonderful! Also, I'd absolutely love a tutorial for 12 if you have the time, it's very generous of you to offer! :>

Thank you so very much!! I'm so pleased that you like them, and this is such a lovely comment! Thank you as well for downloading the textures - if you make anything with them, I'd love to see it! :D

These icons are some of my favorites in this round! Although I haven't watched Doctor Who, I saved a lot of them and I'm sure I will use them because they are simply stunning! Incredibly creative set!
I've always been a fan of negative space, so I'm absolutely in love with #4. The light is #5 is lovely and I love that you decided to rotate the cap. #7 has a great and unusual crop and #9 is also one of my absolute favourites because I adore paint textures, especially when they're so beautifully used as a background (but here personally I think the most gorgeous thing in this icon is that the textures kind of 'hug' her figure but it still stands out). Amongst my other favourites are 12 and 20 (which I loved since you posted them at 20insp-talk) as well as 30, 32, 35 and 37. Great job! ♥
